let the holiday preparations begin

I love autumn. The leaves changing to gorgeous colors, all the pumpkins and gourds, haystacks and scarecrow decorations, cool weather ~ I love wearing hats and sweatshirts with long johns, tromping through pumpkin farms and corn mazes, hay rides, hot apple cider, and the briskness in the air. And pumpkin spice candles ~ let’s not forget the pumpkin spice candles! Autumn is absolutely my favorite season. My Camelot would have a long and enjoyable autumn every year.

Ordinarily autumn doesn’t last very long in Arkansas. We seem of go from way too hot to nicely warm to pleasantly cool to down-right bone chilling cold in a matter of a few weeks usually. It’s sad really, because autumn is a wonderful season here. There are fewer bugs, and when the sun is shining it’s next to impossible not to want to be out in it.

Now that we’re in the middle of October, it’s time to start planning for the upcoming holidays. We don’t do halloween at our house (if you would like to know why, send me an email and I’ll be glad to provide our Biblical view of halloween). We try to keep our focus on God and His goodness, which includes providing the food we need to live healthy lives, and His Son as our Savior so we can spend eternity in heaven with Him.

A few years ago I bought The 12-Week Holiday Planner for the Christian Family. This ebook has been an enormous help for me ~ it keeps me organized, keeps all my thoughts, ideas, and recipes for Thanksgiving and Christmas together in one place, and since it’s a downloadable ebook stored on my computer’s hard drive, all I need to do each year is print out the exact pages I need (rather than buying to book again, OR having to print the entire book every year).

I’m a couple of weeks behind in getting started this year, but that’s okay. I’ve used The 12-Week Holiday Planner for Christian Families several times, so most of everything I need is already in the 3-ring binder that stores the planner. Mainly I just need to make new Christmas gift lists ~ those are always challenging for me!

This year we may not have any out-of-town visitors for Thanksgiving or Christmas. We’ve had guests for the holidays the past several years (which explains my need to use the planner!). To be honest, I’m a little sad that we might not have guests this year. I really enjoy having extended family and friends in our home to celebrate God’s goodness and the birth of His Son with us.

The countdown has begun: less than 6 weeks until Thanksgiving, and less than 10 weeks until Christmas. That puts into perspective, doesn’t it?! I’d better get going on those Christmas gift lists…
